Managing the annual CVSA North American Roadcheck

DSC Logistics was ready for the annual Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) International Roadcheck in North America (United States, Canada, Mexico) in early June.

Although the results of the 2019 Roadcheck have not been published yet, DSC was prepared for the period of disruption. “We aim to use the best transportation providers in the market,” said Ken Heller, DSC’s Chief Transportation Officer. “We are always vigilant and prepared to respond quickly and appropriately.”

During Roadcheck, CVSA-certified inspectors primarily conducted a North American Standard Level I Inspection, but also Level II walk-around driver/vehicle, Level III driver/credential/administrative, or Level V vehicle-only inspections.

Since the International Roadcheck began in 1988, more than 1.6 million inspections have been conducted each year. According to the CVSA, approximately 17 trucks and buses are inspected on average every minute during the annual event.

In 2018, according to J.J. Keller & Associates, Inc., 67, 603 roadside inspections were conducted, and of the Level I inspections conducted, 21.6% were placed out of service. Driver out-of-service rate was 3.9% of all vehicle inspections conducted, and 43.7% of all driver out-of-service condition were for hours of service.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, Transport Canada, and Ministry of Communications and Transportation of Mexico participate in CSVA’s International Roadcheck.
